Brandon Damon: Producer

Owner & Operator of BDV

Education: Ferris State University / Television and Digital Media Production 2008

I’ve been producing video on my own as soon as I got my hands on a camera in high school, filming my friends skateboarding. After noticing my interest , my mother suggest I go to college studying television. I was taking a “Video 1” class during High School which was a good introduction filming and editing on miniDV tape, on an iMac. Once leaving high school, I choose to attend Ferris State University because of their television program. I had a handful of analog to digital encounters there but the real experiences started after college. “I think you’ve got enough credits to graduate” one of my classmates said to me as I ended the last semester of my four year college career. He was the only one to notify me before I signed up for another semester and loan out of creating the routine. Once graduating from Ferris State University’s Television and Digital Media Production Program in May of 2008, I stared a six month internship filming & editing weddings, and got my first part time job in the industry. I held a job producing video ever since with a vision of building my own business one day.

My professional career started part-time at WKTV Community TV in 2008, directly after graduating from the FSU Program. In retrospect I’m very thankful for obtaining that first job considering most peoples employment status at the time, it was the height of the housing crisis. I simultaneously was working a 6 month internship at Coastline Studios filming and editing weddings. In those days my schedule was 9-5pm at Coastline Studios, then 5-10pm at WKTV for six months. But it was at these two places I got some real industry experience. Filming and editing weddings shaped my “run and gun” style filming I still do today, and producing high school sports for PBS, brought an abundance of technical experiences there & leading a crew of volunteers turned out to be extremely challenging, week in and week out- literally shaping part of my personality. During this time I also took jobs like union load-ins at Van Andel and volunteering. It was a great time living in the city of Grand Rapids, as the industry of video production continued to emerge.

I started dating the woman I’d eventually marry, in 2012. She’s from my High School’s rivals town. So we were born sworn enemy’s. Think Romeo & Juliet only modern day. We did the long distance thing for about a year while I was in Grand Rapids, until I made the move back home to the east side of the state to be closer to her and look for more opportunities within my field. That was in 2013.

So, once I out grew my position at WKTV I was looking for work closer to Detroit, closer to home. At the time, I was already driving to Detroit to film rap battles and music videos on weekends or nights, starting to become a familiar name in the scene. I was taking odd production jobs, & trying to network. I was looking for new opportunities, some turned good and some turned out bad. All turned out to be learning experiences, and I’m thankful to have made it through with many lessons learned. All these experiences did was solidify my decision in wanting to start my own video business in Michigan one day.

Thankfully, at the start of 2015 I would eventually land what many people would consider, your dream job. It was in corporate video + photo production. This job opened my eyes to how important of a role video can play in business and how much people really wanted to utilize it- they just didn’t know how. During this time my knowledge of video production would keep growing, and technology regarding digital media continued to progress along with the importance of social platforms. It’s important to note: I also paid my student loan off within my time of full-time employment, almost exactly 10 years after leaving college. It’s a really great story of how and when I quit this corporate job, and I do really love to tell the story. Ask me about it sometime over a beer. But after quitting my Media Director position in the corporate world I got the chance to prove to myself to myself- that I am who I kept telling myself whom I was to be all these years. Make sense?

Anyways, long story short once I quit that job in 2018, I married my dream girl and rode off into the sunset. & I also defeated her towns rival gang (just like romeo & juliet). Then I started my own digital marketing agency with original content creation as the backbone. It’s called Breaker Digital Marketing, and you can check it out here.

Now, combining all the knowledge gained over the years, and the consistent acquisition of new skills- I’m able to offer distribution campaigns to companies and contribute to their online marketing efforts. It’s become a solution to help people grow their businesses all while saving them time, money and improving business relationships. Video Production turned out to be a main component to all of it, and continues to be the preferred learning tool when communicating on today’s internet. Thanks, Mom.

I am a certified FAA drone pilot & when time allows I still like to shoot music videos and weddings when I can.

My main tools of choice right now are Adobe Premier, After Effects, Photoshop, Lightroom a DJI Mavic Pro 3 and my Sony A7s.

At home I’ve got my beautiful wife Jackie, a dog named Jeff and a Cat named Kooky.

Jackie and I produce a travel vlog- mostly for our own enjoyment. But if you want to follow along with our adventure, they are linked below.
